Abstract
In Su rat-ul-Anfal (Spoils of War) (verses 67 – 69) the incident of prisoners of Badar conventionally depict as related to the rebuke and displease of Allah over the decision of the Prophet of Islam, Abu Bakar (R.A.) and his companions and these verses were revealed in appreciation of the Hazrat Umer (R.A.)
This article argue the reasoning and actual addressee of God’s rebuke and displeasure of this verse. For that several quotations from selected Urdu commentaries are critically analyzed. The commentators who are selected here are Sir Sayyed Ahmed Khan, Abul Kalam Azad, Mufti Muhammad Shafi, Allama Ghulam Rasul Saedi, Pir Muhammad Karam Shah Alazhari, Maulana Sayyid Abual Ala Maududi, Khawaja Hameeduddin, translator of the commentary of Namuna Maulana Sayyid Safdar Hussain Najfi, Muhammad Ali Lahori, Maulana Salahuddin Yusuf, Maulana Sayyid Tafhimuddin Muradabadi, Maulana Abdul Karim Asri, and Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi’s names are included.
In this article it is evaluated that regarding the modern commentaries and interpretations of these verses, Maulana Amin Ahsan Islahi has the most sound arguments since he relates the rebuke of God not towards the Prophet of Islam and Abu Bakar rather towards the Kuffar of Mecca.
