Abstract

Broadly speaking, subject of history is based upon three interrelated concepts; knowing past events, the approach by which one comes to know about those events and the purpose behind knowing the past. These three concepts determine the characteristics of history as a subject. We know events by the term of ‘history’, the approach by ‘historiography’ and the purpose by ‘philosophy of history’ respectively. As far as evens are concerned they retain objectivity in their occurrence. Subjectivity begins with the second step when authenticity of the reports is questioned. When the discussion enters in the third domain why we are eager to know about the past, contradictions appear on vast grounds which blurred the subject matter of history. Islamic historiography entertains the three approaches on rich grounds but it suffered from the same problem when philosophical aspects began to gain the ground. Sirah writing, an ancillary science of the Islamic history exhibits the same symptoms regarding the subject matter. The following article seeks to analyze the problems of Sirah writing with respect to the subject matter. It will also put forward some proposals to fix the problem so that Sirah could gain the status of a discipline among other Islamic Sciences.

Imam Abu Hanifa (d.150H) is considered as a renowned jurist and mujtahid mutlaq, with millions of Muslims as followers of his school of thought (mazhab). He has remained very close to the Quran in his judgements. Present article elabrates some of his judgements which were very close to the Quran and expose his Quranic understanding. Dream of the reconstruction of Muslim jurisprudence could not have been fulfilled without the emphasis on Fikri Ijtihad along with Fiqhi Ijtihad, for which Quran was and is the most important, primitive and secure source.

قاضی محمد سلیمان منصور پوری اور ان کی کتاب رحمة اللعالمین

ڈاکٹر محمد سہیل شفیق

Abstract

The book ‘Rahmatun lil a’alamin’ has a fundamental importance among the vast range of sirah literature produced in the 20th century. The book compries 3 volumes published between 1910-32. This was the time when Christian missionaries and arya samaj preachers were targeting the personality of the Holy Prophet in their speeches and writings. Qazi Sahab was aware of all this propaganda. He possessed the capability of responding to all this by virtue of his vast reading, fluent style of writing and historical insight. He replied to this on the basis of the Quranic verse: ‘and argue with them in a better [i.e. more convincing] way’.

On reading the list of source-material of ‘Rahmatun lil A’alamin’, one learns that Qazi Sahab did not rely on Islamic sources alone. He had a strong familiarity with the religious books of other faiths. Basing his response on the holy books of Hinduism and Christianity, he was able to refuse the allegations leveled by the followers of these religions against the Holy Prophet.

In spite of having an argumentative approach, the tone remains refined and courteous.

Qazi Sahab has drawn remarkable conclusions from the accounts of sirah. In this essay, an examination of the book, ‘Rahmatun lil A’alamin’ by Qazi Muhammad Suleiman Mansurpuri has been made keeping in view the detailed dialectics of the science of sirah with all its especial features, trends and range.
